Though 2001 changed America forever, it was a good year for music. Jennifer Lopez became the first female and artist to have both a number one album (J.Lo) and a number one movie (The Wedding Planner) in the same week and though indie fans lost Sunny Day Real Estate, hip-hop fans had plenty of collabs to keep them happy. Notable 2001 events:

  • Wikipedia launches in January
  • George W. Bush succeeds Bill Clinton as the 43rd President of the United States
  • George Harrison, lead guitarist of The Beatles, dies of lung cancer at the age of 58
  • U.S. President George W. Bush signs the USA PATRIOT Act into law after the Sept 11th attacks, which claimed the lives of over 3,000 Americans

2001 was such a good year for poppy-feel-goodness that we're going to double up on this year and continue this next week. But for now, here are 5 songs you were bopping your head to a decade ago.

Jennifer Lopez ft. Ja Rule - I'm Real

Eve ft. Gwen Stefani

Destiny's Child - Independent Woman Part 1

Nelly - Ride Wit Me

Jagged Edge - Where the Party At

More to come next Monday!
