Angela is seriously one of the sweetest people I’ve ever met, and I can say she possesses a truly invaluable talent: making people look and feel beautiful! She and the rest of the team at Behind the Veil take such amazing care of their brides on their special day. Recently, Angela took some time away from her busy beautifying schedule and shared her thoughts with us. Ready to go “behind the veil” with Angela? Keep reading!
How did you get started in the wedding business? My passion for makeup started when I was five (probably younger) and led me to pursue an amazing lifelong career in beauty! For over 10 years I worked with leading makeup company Lancome Cosmetics as both a business manager and resident makeup artist in the Annapolis area and also traveled with the Lancome National Makeup Artist Team for events and promotions. During my time there, I met so many engaged brides who were interested in doing their own makeup, but wanted my advice on the best colors and application. I would sit them down and go through everything, and each time after I was finished they would say, "Can you please come and do this for me?" Once I did my first wedding (all the way back in 2002) I fell in love with weddings and decided to pursue my dream of creating an onsite company to help brides look their absolute best on their big day!
What do you do when you are not working?I'm always working! (I'm a little obsessed with my job.) When I'm not answering emails (or the million other things that go along with running a business), I love to spend as much time as I can with my kiddies. I have the most adorable and energetic five-year-old boy, Niko, and my little spitfire two-year-old daughter, Cecelia, who is already obsessed with lipgloss!! My hubby and I try to make time for date nights once in a blue moon and love grabbing drinks or catching good music in downtown Annapolis and Baltimore.
How would you describe your approach to weddings?I truly love each and every one of my brides! I use the experiences from my own wedding to help my brides with their big day. Behind the Veil was created with the philosophy that this is the bride's special day and we want them to look and feel absolutely amazing! We are there through each step of the process to share tips and advice, not only on hair and makeup, but anything else they may need! We often end up becoming really close with our brides and keeping in touch (Facebook friends!). I love to see our couples a year or two later posting pregnancy and newborn photos! It's amazing to watch the progression of someone's relationship and know that we were a tiny part of the special memories of their day :)
What inspires you in your work?Inspiration is everywhere! Nature, music, fashion, art...beauty can be found in everything! I love creating looks for my brides that make them feel gorgeous but also allow them to feel comfortable (a wedding day version of themselves!). Polished, glowing, radiant with a focus on bringing out their best features to help them feel amazing.
What do you find the most rewarding about your job?Spending the day with a bride along with her friends and family. It is so much fun to be with them on the wedding day in the middle of all the excitement! We meet so many interesting people from all over the world and I love hearing the stories of how everyone is connected. Especially the stories of the bride and groom, how they met, the proposal, etc. It's such a happy day and always makes me want to get married all over again! I also really love getting to work with some of the best and most talented wedding professionals in the area! When I'm not getting together with other vendors for networking events, it's such a great surprise to see them on our bride's day! There's something magical about bringing professionals with various backgrounds and talents together to collaborate and create an amazing day for our couples.
What's the one thing you wish everyone knew about you or your business?Every artist on our team is so unique and different. They are all extremely talented, but all have different backgrounds and very different personalities. We have artists on our team that are hilarious comedians, free-spirited yoga gurus, beautiful mamas, makeup junkies, dance instructors, cubicle office workers by day, singers, psychic readers, massage therapists, estheticians...the list goes on and on and they are all truly amazing!
What do you think sets your company apart from other hair and makeup artists? There are so many talented artists and great companies out there! We are so passionate about our brides, obsessed with weddings, in love with love, and have a slight obsession with hair and makeup! Our artists are all experts in their craft and have been hand-selected for their amazing talents and years of professional experience. Each artist on our beauty team has worked in their field of hairstyling or makeup artistry for at least five years. In fact, most of our artists have actually been in the business of making brides beautiful for 10 to even 20 years! On top of creating gorgeous looks for hundreds of brides each year, many members of our beauty team also work as pro artists for companies such as MAC, Smashbox, Laura Mercier, and Bobbi Brown as well as high-end salons. We love what we do and have a passion and excitement for each wedding and bride that we get to work with!
What do you love about weddings?Everything! It's such an amazing day to be able to have all of your friends and family together in one place to celebrate your happiness and love. And of course, what's not to love about dress shopping, getting pampered with hair and makeup, delicious food, drinks, dancing, photos, smiling from ear to ear the entire day. It's really the perfect day. Oh, and don't forget the honeymoon too!
What do you hate about weddings?I have a love/hate relationship with Pinterest. It's an amazing website and full of gorgeous eye-candy and inspiration! In fact, I really wish it was around when I was planning my own wedding! What I don't care for is that Pinterest, even though it's a super helpful resource, can also be inspiration overload! I notice that a lot of brides can get so stressed over trying to put together the perfect "unique" day full of Pinterest-worthy details. They get so overwhelmed that they no longer have fun with their planning. It should be an exciting time and be a personal reflection of who you are as a couple, not what this year's trends are telling you will be beautiful.
What is the coolest thing you've ever seen at a wedding? One of my gorgeous brides from 2012 had an American/Chinese fusion wedding full of traditions from both sides of the family. Her wedding ceremony included hundreds of paper origami cranes and she surprised her guests afterwards with a traditional Chinese dragon dance performance. It was so cool and very beautiful!
What's the best piece of advice you can give to couples planning a wedding?Enjoy every minute of the planning and big day! Don't stress over the little details. It will all come together perfectly, even if turns out slightly different from what you might have expected. The most important thing to remember is that it's about the celebration of you and the love of your life. Soak in every minute on the big day, and try to sneak away a few times to have a few quite moments together.
Who is your favorite artist or band? I'm a total 80's kid so I love New Wave! I also really like 60's garage rock, punk, alternative rock, some pop and of course old school hip hop (hello Sugarhill Gang!). Really anything danceable!
What is the worst song of all time? Ooooh...I could name a bunch. I would say, probably the traditional reception songs from back in the day (or at my own wedding as requested by my parents!). The Chicken Dance, Electric Slide, Celebration...you know the one's I'm talking about! ;)
Open mic, final thoughts:I'm super excited for another year in business and another wedding season coming up with more gorgeous brides! I have the most amazing team and wouldn't be where I am without each of them along with all the brides, friends and wedding pros that love and support us! I am very lucky to do what I love for a living!
