After spending several years as a DJ and producer in DC, DJ Jeff Furnas took his skills and talent to the west coast in the San Diego area. He returned to the Baltimore / Washington DC area in 2020 and has rejoined the MyDeejay team, delighting our clients for weddings and corporate events. We asked Jeff to share a bit about about his DJ career, here’s what he had to say!
What is your relationship with music? What does it mean to you?
“For me, music is all about feeling. After over 10 years as a DJ and a producer, I am always keeping an ear out for unique sounds – something will catch my ear and I’ll say, ‘Woah, how did they make that sound and is there more?’ A few Spotify recommendations, and I’ve lost an afternoon on a deep dive on Discogs looking up every artist that label put out. A few years back, I started a music label just to share some of the sounds I was finding – I love that music can bring you back to the time and place where you first heard it, and that something you’ve never heard can bring you to a place you’ve never been.”
What do you enjoy about being a wedding DJ?
“I love being a part of weddings because they’re so special and fun. How many people can say they get to help throw parties and make people genuinely happy? When I fit the right song into the right moment and the crowd all comes together, there’s nothing better. Oh, and that moment when a couple requests a song I’ve never heard before and it turns out to be the hit of the night – I’m always grateful to discover new, awesome music!”
What’s your favorite kind of couple/crowd to work with?
“I love to working with couples that have a really specific vision, or are hoping to hand things off to me and just relax. Polar opposites, I know – but both approaches work! My favorite crowds are the ones that come to party and want to hear one more song at the end of the night.”
What’s the best one or two pieces of advice you give to couples?
“Keep things simple, do what makes you feel comfortable, and, most of all, enjoy yourself! If all the details feel a bit daunting, I’m here to take things off your plate. Of course, if details are your thing, don’t be shy about sending me your wedding playlist and we’ll get into the details together!”
What are some fun or interesting things about you that couples might want to know?
“My wife and I live in Baltimore with our energetic dog, Fava (yes, like the bean!). We watch a lot of movies, cook constantly, and love making our own ice cream and desserts. I collect and read poetry and build synthesizers, and I hope to one day open a food truck to share my ever-expanding menu of breakfast sandwiches with the world!”
