Spending several years as an independent DJ before joining the MyDeejay team, DJ Keion Gaskins knows what it takes to put on a fantastic dance party. We asked Keion to share a bit about himself and his approach as a professional DJ, and here’s what he had to say!
What is your relationship with music? What does it mean to you?
“Music has always been an outlet for me – I could get transported to a different world when I hear a great song. Music really helps me relate to not only the artist, but also other people who enjoy music. Music has a unique way of uniting strangers in a room and I find it very fascinating how quickly it can connect people – especially on the dancefloor.”
What do you enjoy about being a wedding DJ?
“I enjoy all small, special moments that get created when people are having fun. I like to see all the family and friends come together to celebrate the couple, and enjoy their first big celebration as a new family. I get to provide the soundtrack that not only represents a couple’s love, but the songs people like to party to and balance that with what is appropriate for the crowd.”
What’s your favorite kind of couple/crowd to work with?
“I like to work with couples and crowds with great energy – people come to a wedding and want to have a great time, and it’s my job to deliver. I pride myself on being flexible and I can tailor my style to meet the needs of each crowd in the moment.”
What’s the best one or two pieces of advice you give to couples?
“Delegate as much as you can on the day of the wedding so you can actually enjoy yourselves! This is the big night you have to celebrate your love, so hire great professionals you can trust and everything will work out.”
What are some fun or interesting things about you that couples might want to know?
“I am originally from New Jersey and if you know anything about Jersey, you know we can seriously party! I’m always happy to create magic for my couples, and if my clients are having fun then I’m having fun.”
