DJ Shawn Garrick started his career as a club DJ while stationed in Turkey as a member of the armed forces, and brings that same sense of dedication to creating magical moments as a member of MyDeejay’s team. We caught up with Shawn and asked him to give us some background on his experience as a professional DJ, and this is what he had to say!
What is your relationship with music? What does it mean to you?
“My relationship with music started with digging through my parent’s CD collection and watching music videos on MTV (when they actually played music). At some point I began recording and producing music with my friends – we would spend hours upon hours on weekends recording and producing tracks to upload to the internet. Later, during my time in Air Force, I would spend my off-duty hours DJing parties and ceremonies for other service members. Music will always be an integral part of my life, and I couldn’t imagine life without it.”
What do you enjoy about being a wedding DJ?
“A wedding is one of the most important days for a couple and their families, so the pressure to perform is always there. It keeps the job exciting, and I treat every wedding as if it were my first – I never want my setlist to feel stale or predictable. Having the opportunity to play a critical role in such an important event is not something I take for granted.”
What’s your favorite kind of couple/crowd to work with?
“When it comes to couples, I like working with anyone who is creative and has a lot of ideas, or who just want me to do my thing! As far as crowds, it’s hard to pick a favorite – there’s something to love about all couples/crowds I’ve worked with. Any crowd that leaves the reception happy is a favorite for me, because that’s what I’m there to do.”
What’s the best one or two pieces of advice you give to couples?
“My best advice for couples on the wedding day is to let the professionals work while you enjoy the day! You don’t want to be working on your wedding day, so trust that the plan will be executed and spend that time with your loved ones, who will support you no matter what!”
What are some fun or interesting things about you that couples might want to know?
“I’ve lived in 3 countries and 5 states in my lifetime (so far!) – moving this much has allowed me to experience all kinds of music and cultures.”
